Active research projects

Research in my Ph.D. dissertation [pdf]: New Interaction Techniques
Includes multimodal human-computer interaction and two-handed interaction techniques.
Other related research in our department can be found in the TAUCHI research pages.

My hobby research in agent technology: InfoAge - Information Observing Agent
Other agent-related research in our department can be found in the Agent Technology pages.

JCAT - Collaborative Active Textbooks using Java

JCAT was my summer project when I was spending my summer as a research intern at DEC Systems Research Center in 1996. JCAT is based on the CAT system that was written by Marc Brown and Marc Najork. Marc Najork maintains the JCAT home page at the SRC Web server. The project was my first major work using the Java language after four years of C/C++ coding.

You can read more of this project in two research papers, JCAT: Collaborative Active Textbooks Using Java and A Java-Based Implementation of Collaborative Active Textbooks.

Avaruusgeometrian visualisointiohjelma XYZ-360° - a visualization program for space geometry

I developed XYZ-360° with Juha Lehikoinen as a joint student project in the courses Computer Graphics, Programming Graphical User Interfaces, and Programming Project in 1993. This project was our first major work using the C language and gave us a good knowledge of GUI programming.

The XYZ-360° user interface is entirely finnish, so there is no demo available in English. If you speak Finnish or want to try to guess the correct menu options, you may wish to proceed to the Finnish XYZ-360° pages where you will find a downloadable program packet.

There is also a short Java demo of a student project that investigated the possibilities of porting XYZ-360° to Java.

Tietotekniikan perusoppimateriaali (Self-learning material for introductory course in computing)

(This material is entirely in Finnish, so I'll write the explanation in Finnish.)

Tietotekniikan perusoppimateriaali on Hypermedialaboratorion ja Tietojenkäsittelyopin laitoksen yhteistyöprojekti, jossa valmistettiin mikrotietokoneiden perussovellusten itseopiskelumateriaali WWW-sovelluksena. Minun roolini projektissa oli seurausta kolmen vuoden työrupeamasta Tietotekniikan peruskurssin vastaavana opettajana ja kurssimateriaalin kirjoittajana. Projekti sai käyttöönsä kurssimonisteideni tekstit, joita käytettiin apuna toteutettaessa interaktiivista materiaalia mm. Java-teknologiaa käyttäen. Projektilla on oma kotisivu, josta sovelluksen voi hakea täydellisenä opiskelutarkoituksiin.
