Topic Child Computer Interaction

Teaching This is a two-day introduction course to Child Computer Interaction. There will be a mixture of lectures, practical sessions and demonstrations.

The course will provide an introductory overview of the following topics:

  • How children differ from adults
  • Gathering requirements from children
  • Paradigms for interactive products for children
  • Novel Interaction techniques and their uses with children
  • Interface design for child users
  • Accessibility and ethics
  • Evaluation of products with and for children
  • Understanding the motivations of children
We will focus on practical solutions to real research and development problems. These will include tools and techniques as well as guidelines and methods.

About the teacher
Janet C. Read is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN), Preston, England. Her research interests include Child Computer Interaction, Handwriting recognition-based interfaces and Teaching and Learning in Computing. She is a founder member of the Child Computer Interaction Group (www.chici.org) at UCLAN and is currently organizing the 2nd Interaction Design and Children Conference (www.idc2003.org).
