Ubiquitous Computing
"Ubiquitous computing names the third wave in computing, just now beginning. First were mainframes, each shared by lots of people. Now we are in the personal computing era, person and machine staring uneasily at each other across the desktop. Next comes ubiquitous computing, or the age of calm technology, when technology recedes into the background of our lives. Alan Kay of Apple calls this 'Third Paradigm' computing."- Mark Weiser This Project The new communication and intelligence features of smart devices form a networked system whose individual user interfaces create a collective user interface which has new features and functions that emerge from the collective behavior of the individual components. Collecting the intelligent sensory information at the individual devices (sensory fusion) and distributing this data over the network to be combined with the cumulative information in the system wide database (information fusion) will give new possibilities to design usable collective user interfaces. This three year project began in 1999. It is sponsored by the Academy of Finland. |
