Research and Teaching on Agents in the University of Tampere

Agents have interested the teachers and researchers at the Department of Computer and Information Sciences since the early 1990's. The work undertaken so far has produced two agent systems and several research papers in scientific journals and conferences.

Research

The main theme in research has been agent based learning environments where the multiple actors in a learning environments are providing engaging and challenging opportunities to learn for the human learner. First prototypes on this area were constructed already in 1990. Another theme is information filtering. We have built a system that filters information on the Web and newsgroups. Some research on mobile agents has been carried out.

Teaching

Teaching on agents started in 1995 as seminars at the undergraduate level and these seminars have continued every so often. The first course on Agent Programming in Java was given in 1997 and will be lectured every second year. The course on AI Programming Techniques provides a good basic coverage of related themes (in Prolog). This course is given every second year.
