1. Identify concepts and develop theories relevant to the planning, analysis, design and evaluation of information systems.
2. Develop languages, techniques, tools and methods for applying these concepts and theories to the

   - requirement analysis and determination, and specification
   - design
   -evolution of information systems, and their verification, validation and overall evaluation.
3. Develop methodologies for the analysis, evaluation and selection of information systems development methods.
4. Take cognizance of relevant work from associated fields.

IFIP TC8 is the IFIP Technical Committee dedicated to the field of Information Systems. It was established in 1966, and aims to promote and encourage the advancement of research and practice of concepts, methods, techniques and issues related to information systems in organisations.

The International Federation for Information Processing is a multinational federation of professional and technical organisations (or national groupings of such organisations) concerned with information processing. From any one country, only one such organisation - which must be representative of the national activities in the field of information processing - can be admitted as a Full Member. On 1 January, 1994, 43 organisations were Full Members of the Federation, representing 53 countries.

The Federation is governed by a General Assembly which meets once every year and consists of one representative from each Member organisation. The Federation is organised into the IFIP Council, the Executive Board, and the Technical Assembly. The Technical Assembly is divided into eleven Technical Committees and two Specialist Groups. These Committees and Groups are in turn Divided into Working Groups, of which IFIP WG 8.1 is one (under Technical Committee 8).
