We participate in several national and international research projects, funded by Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes), Academy of Finland, European Commission, Nordunet3, and Ministry of Transport and Communications. We have also received a research grant from Hewlett-Packard.
COMPANIONS is an EU Framework 6 IP project. The aim of the project is to make computer interfaces more human-like with multimodal interfaces, from speech understanding to emotion recognition. We will explore agent-based interfaces, ones in which the user communicates with a virtual character using multimodal dialogue.
Täplä (Ambient intelligence based on sound, speech and multisensor interaction) is funded by TEKES. The goal of the project is to develop methods for new type of ubiquitous applications based on sound, speech, machine vision and multimodality. Research covers technology, applications and usability. The solutions aim at improving safety, comfort, automation, costs and the quality of applications visible to end users. The project works both with the solutions available today and the solutions of the future, that are to be enabled soon when technology matures. Prototype applications that are interesting to consumers and work as part of the environment will be developed.
PRIMA (Privacy in the Making) is funded by Nordunet3. We seek to provide directions for symbiotic technical and regulatory mechanisms for supporting ICT related privacy. We will provide concrete technological and regulatory mechanisms to successfully guide and manage privacy in the context of future ICT.
PUMS is a part of Tekes-funded Fenix-program. In this project, we develop mobile speech-based and multimodal public transport information services. See a description of different applications for further information.
We participated in COST278 (Spoken Language Interaction In Telecommunication) and MUMIN (Nordic Network for MUltiModal INterfaces) research networks.
Dumas is is an international project having both academic and industrial participants from Finland, Sweden, Germany and United Kingdom. The project deals with interaction methods and techniques in speech-based applications. Multilinguality is one major issue in this international project. Dumas is funded by European Union IST program.
The goal of the project is to study user interfaces based on EMFi-technology. Especially our aim is to develop speech and ubiquitous applications based on EMFi.
Mobile User Interfaces is a project where we use Handheld PC's and wireless networks to study how speech based mobile applications should be build and used. This project is supported by the HP Voice Web Initiative in the HP philanthropy program.
Usix-Interact is a national project where we work together with research groups from several Finnish universities. Our aim is to develop better models for natural language based human computer interaction. Interact project is funded by Finnish National Technology Agency (TEKES) and several industrial partners. It is one of the eight language technology projects in a TEKES funded USIX (User-Oriented Information Technology) program.
Ubiquitous Computing project studies interfaces that reside in our everyday environment. In this project, we have been building the Doorman system. Ubiquitous computing project is funded by Academy of Finland.
In a TEKES funded Speech User Interfaces project we built the first version of Mailman, a speech-based e-mail client for telephone users.
