Applications

Our work is focused on constructive research and we have built several applications and research prototypes. All applications are based on Jaspis framework.

Jaspis

Jaspis Jaspis is an open framework for adaptive speech applications. Jaspis is designed to support distributed, highly context-sensitive applications that adapt to a user and an environment. Jaspis is especially designed for multilingual applications. The fundamental principles of the Jaspis framework include shared information management, evaluator-based agent frameworks for dialogue management, speech outputs and communication management (speech inputs and general input device coordination).

Matkamies / RouteGuide

RouteGuide is a mobile multimodal system for local transportation and route information. The current version supports travel in Helsinki, Vantaa and Espoo and entire Finland will be covered in a following version. The first version for S60 phones, with speech output, and for all MIDP2 phones without speech has been pubished 21.-24.5.2007 in UITP conference in Helsinki and it is publicly available from matkamies.cs.uta.fi. Special attention for visually impaired people have been and will be conducted during the design & development.

JNabServer

Nabaztag bunnies JNabServer is an open-source server software which handles communication with Nabaztag/tags, Wi-Fi enabled robotic rabbits that can be used as physical user-agents in human-computer interaction. JNabServer is written in J2SE 6.0 (Java Standard Edition) so it is platform independent. People can develop their applications and ideas more freely on the jNabServer platform by removing the need for connection to remote services, which gives huge improvements in response times when comparing the global servers and a local JNabServer.

MUMS

MUMS MUMS system is accessed from a standard PDA device (some features must be disabled in simpler client devices, e.g. mobile phones), and is aimed at public transportation commuters. Users interact with the system using natural speech and map gestures. The system responds with synthetic speech and graphical map representations. The system also utilizes GPS information, which not only aids the user in pinpointing his/her location, but also simplifies dialogue.

Pysäkkimies / Stopman

Pysäkkimies is a spoken dialogue system that provides bus stop specific timetables for Tampere area busses. Pysäkkimies was built as a part of Heili -program and improved in PUMS project and it has been publicly available since 2003.

Postimies / Mailman

Postimies Mailman (Postimies in Finnish) is a multilingual (finnish, english) e-mail client designed to provide basic e-mail reading capabilities for telephone users (for both desktop and mobile phone users). The first version of Mailman has been in a public use since 1998. Several new versions are on the way, one of them being targetted for visually impaired users.

Bussimies / Busman

Bussimies Busman is a speech based system for bus timetable infomation in Tampere, Finland. Busman will serve bus timetable information using Finnish speech recognition and speech synthesis. Busman will be available for telephone users.

Ovimies / Doorman

Ovimies Ovimies (Doorman, doorkeeper) is a computationally enhanced environment and research test-bed implemented in our facilities where it serves staff members and visitors of our research unit by helping in their everyday communicational tasks and guiding them in the premises. The most visible part of the system are the little puppets, or robots that contain means for audio input and output as well as visual feedback.
