Teaching

Interactive Technology it is a multidisciplinary programme that combines elements from, for example, psychology, computer science, education, social psychology, and linguistics to form a more complete understanding of HCI (See here for more information on Interactive Technology discipline at the University of Tampere). At the moment, there are three psychologically oriented courses available at our department. The group leader, Veikko Surakka, is also responsible for the post-graduate seminar in HCI.

  • Human Factors in Interactive Technology 2 ETCS (1 cu)

The aim is to study the basics of human cognitive and emotional processes, as well as the basic factors of human-human interaction. During the course, the students will gain a preliminary understanding for utilizing these factors when developing efficient and enjoyable human-computer interaction. The course consists of lectures and literature focusing on the mechanisms of human perception, attention, memory, non-verbal behaviour, and emotion, as well as effects of emotions on cognitive processing.

    Time schedule: Spring, period IV.

  • Emotions and Sociality in Interactive Technology (Lectured in Finnish) 6 ETCS (3 cu)

The aim of this course is to give students a deep understanding about the basis of human communication and about the meaning of emotions in inter-individual and intra-individual behavior. The course opens visions of how human-technology interaction could be developed in the future. The course consists of a series of lectures and discussions about nonverbal communication, neural and biological basis of communication and emotions, interconnections between emotions and cognition and motivation, and human-computer interaction.

    Time schedule: Spring, period III.

  • Human Information Processing and Interactive Technology 6 ETCS (3cu)

After completing this course, the students will have a deeper understanding on human information-processing. The topics of the course include the processes in sensation and perception, attention, memory, and the basic phenomena related to thinking and problem-solving. The emphasis will be on the applicability of the covered topics to interactive technology.

    Time schedule: Fall, period I.
